The act of "ignoring the word of God" carries significant consequences in the Bible, often leading to spiritual decay, destruction, separation from God, a lack of wisdom, and divine judgment.
Hebrews 2:1-4New International Version
Apostle Paul warned and encouraging all believers of Christ to pay the most careful attention to the word of God.
1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.(Please read the whole chapter of Hebrew 2 to know more about salvation.)...
These are some consequences found throughout scripture include:
· 1.Spiritual Blindness and Lack of Knowledge: The Bible warns that deliberately choosing to ignore God's instruction leads to a lack of discernment and understanding. Hosea 4:6 states, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you as My priests".
· 2.Self-Deception and Moral Decay: Individuals who ignore God's word often fall into self-deception, believing they are fine while their moral and spiritual foundations crumble. Romans 1 describes the consequence of ignoring God as a descent into moral depravity and futile thinking.
· 3.Divine Judgment and Discipline: God's word repeatedly warns of judgment for disobedience. The prophet Samuel told King Saul, "Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you" from being king. Jesus, in the parable of the wise and foolish builders, compares those who ignore His words to a foolish man whose house is destroyed by a storm.
· 4.Loss of Blessings and Prosperity: Obedience is often linked to blessings and guidance. Ignoring God's commands can lead to missed opportunities for divine favor and an unfulfilling life, described as a "spiritual desert" or "famine"
· 5.Eternal Consequences: Ultimately, the Bible points to eternal separation from God for those who persistently reject His word and the salvation offered through Christ our Lord and savior. The words spoken by God will serve as the standard of judgment on the last day. John 3:16-18
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
The central message across the gospel is that we need to have restoration of our relationship with God (Ephesians 2). It involves believing in the Son with repentance to be reconciled to the Father. It must be a personal confession of our sins and accepting the truth wholeheartedly before him (Romans 10:9). It is not just by our lips but together with our faith and action. In other words, it is not just enough that we’re hearing the word every Sunday or in every worship gathering, but it must be shown to us personally, that we are actively applying and obeying His word in our daily life. We are also commanded in his word to live like how Jesus Christ live to please our Heavenly Father, to be holy for He is a Holy God.
Therefore, we need to know more about Jesus Christ who is the author and perfecter of our faith.Who is also the way,the truth and the life. So, as his believers we do really needs to be united in him, focusing our attention on his teaching alone as one family.Encouraging one another so that no one among us will be drifted away. We need to be aware that we have an enemy like a thief and a destroyer of our faith (John 10:10). And the only way for us to be set free from all of these enemy scheme(deception, defiance, discouragement) is our faith with obedience in Christ Jesus alone.
Memory Verse: John 8:31-32 English Standard Version (The Truth Will Set You Free)
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
